Woman Dead, Man Fighting for Life After Double Shark Attack

A terrifying scene unfolded on a remote stretch of the New South Wales Mid North Coast this morning as a young woman was killed and a man left in critical condition following a brutal double shark attack.

The tragedy occurred at Crowdy Bay, south of Port Macquarie, turning an early morning swim into a desperate fight for survival.

"Horrific" Scenes at Remote Beach

Emergency services were called to the beach within Crowdy Bay National Park at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Witnesses at the scene were confronted with a nightmare scenario. A woman, believed to be in her 20s, had suffered catastrophic injuries. Despite the frantic efforts of bystanders and paramedics to save her, she died at the scene. She has yet to be formally identified.

A man, also believed to be in his 20s, was also mauled during the incident.

Bystanders Launch Rescue Attempt

In a heroic act of quick thinking, a bystander on the beach reportedly used swimmers (bathing suits) to fashion an improvised tourniquet around the man's leg to stem the bleeding.

The man was stabilized enough to be airlifted to John Hunter Hospital, where he remains in critical condition with serious injuries.

"No Lifeguarding Services"

Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steven Pearce highlighted the isolation of the location, noting the lack of immediate professional help available.

"Tragically, one young female has been fatally killed by a shark, and there’s another male that’s been flown to hospital," Pearce told 2GB radio. "This incident occurred at quite a remote location... there’s no lifeguarding services up there at all."

He added, "These incidents are horrific for everyone, and unfortunately, we’ve had a few this year already."

Hunt for the Shark

The beach has been closed to the public. Police are currently coordinating with experts from the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) to deploy drone surveillance. Their priority is to locate the shark and determine the species responsible for the fatal double mauling.

This region is no stranger to shark encounters. In 2023, local man Toby Begg survived a mauling by a Great White just north of this location at Lighthouse Beach, managing to fight the predator off after suffering severe leg injuries.
