Four people have been killed and 14 others remain injured following a shooting during a family gathering in Stockton, Northern California, on Saturday night. Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee confirmed the violence unfolded at a child’s birthday party. Police reported receiving calls shortly before 6 p.m. local time regarding a shooting near the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue.
Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Heather Brent confirmed the four fatalities, though she noted that information remains limited as the investigation continues. Several victims were transported to nearby hospitals, with ages ranging from juveniles to adults. During a press conference on Saturday night, Brent stated that early indications suggest the attack may have been a targeted incident. She emphasized that the investigation is very active and that their number one priority is identifying the suspect. Detectives are urging anyone with information to contact the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Office released a statement late Saturday confirming that the Office of Emergency Services is monitoring the evolving situation and coordinating with local law enforcement.
Vice Mayor Jason Lee expressed his heartbreak on Facebook, writing that his heart is heavy in a way that is hard to put into words. He stated that as someone who grew up in the community, he is devastated and angry to learn about a mass shooting at a child’s birthday party, noting that an ice cream shop should never be a place where families fear for their lives. Lee added that seeing children, parents, and neighbors go through this shakes him deeply, asserting that the community deserves the truth and the impacted families deserve justice.
